This study explores the migration and settlement experiences of North Korean refugees, focusing on diaspora communities in Dongbei, China, and New Malden in the UK. It examines how individuals develop the capacity to become empowered “Bridge Citizens” contributing to future peacebuilding on the Korean Peninsula.
To capture these complex life trajectories, the research adopts a mixed-methods design that combines a retrospective quasi-longitudinal survey with autobiographical narrative inquiry, poetic inquiry, and Photovoice. In the analysis section, I will introduce our collaborative work with Dr. Pauline Prevett from the University of Manchester on the development of the bespoke “CISA Rhythm” analysis tool, as well as share preliminary findings using an AI-assisted visual-narrative identity analysis tool to interpret participants’ photographic narratives.
